The art form is inspired from an atmosphere saturated with the tales of Mahabharta and Ramayan or the Lord Krishna’s Ras-leela, ardent love of the divine couples like Radha Krishna, Sita Rama, Shiva Shakti or festivals of worshipping of or fervid devotion to Shakti in diverse forms of Bhagvati, Gauri, Kali, and the Bhagvata Purana. This art-form celebrates the beautiful, fertile earth in the longer days of the northern solstitial movement and propitiates the dormant spirits of mountains and forests during the shorter days of the southern solstitial movement. Madhubani lives on, in its pristine habitat and in its dispersion, to surround life and death with the same vivacious colour and statuesque pose, devoid of the bleak and sombre. It goes on working, in fine black outline, filled with umber brown, bright orange and green, dust pink, ochre red and dull yellow turmeric, to endow our humdrum life with dignity and grandeur.
