This painting is the the depictition of odia novel "Nila mastarani " which explores the complexity of caste system, widow remarriage, women education in 19th century odisha. In this story Nila, a Brahmin educated widow was allowed to teach in the village, hence she was mastarani. When she fell in love with a man of dhobi (washerman) caste and married him, she was no more allowed to teach in the village. Even her brother didn't invite her to his marriage. As now she was a dhobani (washerwoman) by caste she secretly collected her newly Wed sister in laws yellow Saree to clean it, so that she could be some how involved in her brother's marriage.
